![]() Robinson in the 19th century, remains today as the best option in relation to important scientific and economic sectors such as the meteorology sector or the wind energy sector. The cup anemometer, wind speed sensor developed by T.R. Results indicate wind speed errors six times larger in the case of using FFT. Two ways of extracting the output frequency, by Counting Pulses, CP, and by using FFT were compared. Besides, the way the output signal is registered in order to correlate the output frequency with the wind speed has proven to be also a source of error. It has been found that the three accelerations of the rotor are translated into a pulsed output signal that could lead to some error if that is not taken into account. The output signal of first class cup anemometers such as Thies CLIMA First Class, Thies CLIMA 4.3350, and Vector Instruments is analyzed in order to obtain insights on the instrument accuracy. In the present paper, the work carried out in relation to this instrument at the IDR/UPM Institute is briefly summarized, and then the results from the last research testing campaigns are included. Despite the great advances reached by new technologies as sonic anemometry, LIDAR or SODAR, the cup anemometer is the most demanded wind speed sensor thanks to its balance between accuracy, reliability, endurance and cost. Robinson in the 19 th century, remains today as the best option in relation to important scientific and economic sectors such as the meteorology sector or the wind energy sector. These are the inertia of three-arm cup anemometers as well as the deviation of the measurands in case of oblique inflow. However, there are downsides of three-arm cup anemometers, too. the top of cablecars, cranes and wind turbines. ![]() ![]() Due to low maintenance requirements three-arm cup anemometers are preferably used for long-term measurements at hardly accessible locations as e.g. The flow rate of air perpendicular to the rotation axis of the anemometer follows directly from the measured number of signals per time unit. The advantages of cup anemometers can be seen in their simple and solid construction as well as in the simplicity of speed measurement by optical or electro-magnetic pulse generation. In rear cases they have got four cups, too. Typically cup anemometers have got three cups. In technical applications, they are often used for a measurement of the horizontal component of wind speed. Definition of task Usually, cup anemometers are rugged, versatile wind speed sensors providing an excellent price-to-performance ratio. Numerical results which were validated by experimental data are presented and discussed. This contribution addresses questions concerning the behaviour of rotating cup anemometers in case of changing direction of inflow by means of numerical simulation (CFD). These are on the one hand the inertia of the anemometer in case of gusts of wind and on the other hand the uncertainty whether the data delivered are faulty in case of oblique inflow. However, cup anemometers have got disadvantages, too. Through combining the sophisticated production equipment with the leading technology, the product is delicately designed and manufactured with the excellent characteristics of fine appearance, strong durability and usability, and wide application.what is a rain gauge, rain gauge uses, digital liquid level sensor.Cup anemometers are often used for the measurement of wind speed because they offer many practical advantages like simple and robust construction, simplicity of speed measurement and low maintenance requirements. Only the finest raw materials are adopted in the product.
